Data Encapsulation Object-Oriented Programming Basics

Data encapsulation is the most important concept to grasp when programming with  objects. In object-oriented programming data  encapsulation is concerned with: Combining data and how its manipulated in one place. This is achieved through the state (the private fields) and the behaviors (the public methods) of an object.Only allowing the state of an object to be accessed and modified through behaviors. The values contained within an objects state can then be strictly controlled.Hiding the details of how the object works. The only part of the object that is accessible to the outside world is its behaviors. What happens inside those behaviors and how the state is stored is hidden from view. Enforcing Data Encapsulation First, we must design our objects so that they have state and behaviors. We create private fields that hold the state and public methods that are the behaviors. For example, if we design a person object we can create private fields to store a persons first name, last name, and address. The values of these three fields combine to make the objects state. We could also create a method called displayPersonDetails to display the values of the first name, last name, and address to the screen. Next, we must make behaviors that access and modify the state of the object. This can be accomplished in three ways: Constructor methods. A new instance of an object is created by calling a constructor method. Values can be passed to a constructor method to set the initial state of an object. There are two interesting things to note. First, Java does not insist that every object has a constructor method. If no method exists then the state of the object uses the default values of the private fields. Second, more than one constructor method can exist. The methods will differ in terms of the values that are passed to them and how they set the initial state of the object.Accessor methods. For every private field we can create a public method that will return its value.Mutator methods. For every private field we can create a public method that will set its value. If you want a private field to be read only do not create a mutator method for it. For example, we can design the person object to have two constructor methods. The first one doesnt take any values and simply sets the object to have a default state (i.e., the first name, last name, and address would be empty strings). The second one sets the initial values for the first name and last name from values passed to it. We can also create three accessor methods called getFirstName, getLastName and getAddress that simply return the values of the corresponding private fields. Create a mutator field called setAddress that will set the value of the address private field. Lastly, we hide the implementation details of our object. As long as we stick to keeping the state fields private and the behaviors public there is no way for the outside world to know how the object works internally. Reasons for Data Encapsulation The main reasons for employing data encapsulation are: Keeping the state of an object legal. By forcing a private field of an object to be modified by using a public method, we can add code into the mutator or constructor methods to make sure the value is legal. For instance, imagine the person object also stores a username as part of its state. The username is used to log into the Java application were building but is constrained to a length of ten characters. What we can do is add code into the usernames mutator method that makes sure the username is not set to a value longer than ten characters. We can change the implementation of an object. As long as we keep the public methods the same we can change how the object works without breaking the code that uses it. The object is essentially a black box to the code that calls it.Re-use of objects. We can use the same objects in different applications because we have combined the data and how its manipulated in one place. The independence of each object. If an object is incorrectly coded and causing errors, its easy to test and fix because the code is in one place. In fact, the object can be tested independently from the rest of the application. The same principle can be used in large projects where different programmers can be assigned the creation of different objects.

Movie Analysis The Night - 767 Words

As I walked up to Wendy, Kate, and Alex, I could tell they had very exciting news. Alex was jumping up and down. Kate was waving at me telling me to come quicker. While all this was going on, Wendy was in the back laughing at them. It was hilarious watching them. As I walked up to them, they all started screaming. â€Å"OH MY GOD, DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MOVIE?† Alex screamed. â€Å"If you keep yelling in her ear, she won’t.† Wendy remarked. â€Å"Oh, well did you?† Alex asked. While we were watching the movie I saw someone that looked a lot like my sister. Since I couldn’t see if it was her, I decided to sink deeper into the seat. I decide to just not worry about it and continue to watch the movie. After the movie ended, we all walked out chattering about how amazing the movie was. I looked up, and I saw my mom standing there with her arms crossed. Her facial expression was unreadable. As I got closer, her face hardened. The next thing I noticed was that my sister was in the backseat smirking at me. I knew it was her who tattled on me. My friends saw my mom, and quickly slipped away because they knew how my mom was when she was very mad. W hen I got into the car, my mom started driving home. I was so scared about what would happen. In the rearview mirror I saw my sister smiling at me smugly. I glared at her because she was being very annoying. When we got home my mom stopped me, and had me stand outside. A Midsummer Night’s Dream an Ecological Interpretation Free Essays

string(202) " already written by the present researcher and published in the Research Spectrum \(August-2012 Issue\) contains some hints of the Eco-criticism in Shakespeare’s plays as seen by Rabindranath Tagore\." A Midsummer Night’s Dream: An Ecocritical Interpretation Lieutenant Asit Biswas Bio-Notes: Lieut. Asit Biswas is an Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, and Associate NCC Officer, Acharya B. We will write a custom essay sample on A Midsummer Night’s Dream: an Ecological Interpretation or any similar topic only for you Order Now N. Seal (Govt. ) College, Cooch Behar, W. B. ABSTRACT: Shakespeare studies in India started as early as in the early decades of the 19th century when the Indians seldom engaged in Shakespeare interpretation and so the term ‘ecocriticism’ was unheard of. What we mean by the phrase ‘Critical studies of Shakespeare’ started in India in 1917 when Hindu College (later on Presidency College and now Presidency University) was founded. Then Shakespeare began to be evaluated from an oriental point of view. Some of those interpretations may be considered ecocriticism. The same thing was done by Purna Chandra Basu (in his article â€Å"Sahitye Khoon†, D. L. Roy (in his book, Kalidas O Bhababhuti) etc. Eco-criticism as a literary movement, as Yogesh K. Tiwari and N. D. R. Chandra say, began in the 1990s. But ecocritical evaluation of Shakespeare’s plays from Indian point of view is yet to flourish well. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream one can find plethora of materials relevant not only for the students of literature but of environmental studies also. The aim of the present play is to reinterpret Shakespeare’ play A Midsummer Night’s Dream from ecocritical point of view and thereby justify the contemporaneity of the Bard. Now-a-days many in many universities in India the students have to read English and Environmental Studies as compulsory subjects, Shakespeare being a part of the former. As the students of literature they would be keen to trace out the aesthetic aspects of the dramas of Shakespeare while belonging to various disciplines they would naturally seek for the relevance of Shakespeare in the present context. So the paper is an attempt to bring out Shakespeare’s anticipation of the environmental problems and thereby prove Shakespeare as a topic of both literature and environmental studies. Modern environmentalism began with ‘A Fable for Tomorrow’, in Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1962). Mrs. Frederick Boas edited the Cambridge collection of Tempest Essays; Richard Kerridge N. Shammells published Writing the Environment, Eco-criticism and Literature (Zed Books-1998); J. Bate L. Coupe published The Green Studies Reader from Romanticism to Eco-Criticism (by New York, Routeledge-2000);but the most outstanding book in this field is Green Shakespeare by Gabriel Egan who says, Crossing he boundaries of literary and cultural studies to draw in politics, philosophy and ecology, this volume not only introduces one of the most lively areas of contemporary Shakespeare studies, but also  puts forward  a convincing case for Shakespeare’s continuing relevance to contemporary theory. There is a significant school named as the Association for the study of Literature and Environment which was started in America and now has its branches in Japan and UK. I t is mainly an association of the eco-critics. The Role of Literature in Placing a Value on the Environment: As Daniel B. Botkin and Edward A. Keller say in their book Environmental Science (5th edition, Page No. 11) the value of the environment is based on the following justifications: aesthetic, creative, recreational, inspirational, moral, cultural and utilitarian (materialistic). Aesthetic justification has to do with our appreciation of beauty of nature. Many people prefer living in the world of wilderness to one without it. Rabindranath Tagore created an instance by leaving the clutter of Calcutta settling down in the lap of Nature in Santiniketan. In Shakespeare the Forest of Arden minimizes the bereavement of the Duke in As You Like It. But in the Duke’s bemoaning for the subordination of the forest we hear the voice of an ecologist. It would not be a digression to say that Tagore’s ecocentrism is again found in Siksha: Tapoban in his comment on Shakespeare’s plays. While ecology is a mother branch of science, ecocriticism is comparatively a new branch which attempts to establish a relationship between literature and the physical environment. As Greg Garrard quotes in his book Eco-criticism from Glotfelty’s book The Eco-criticism Reader: Landmark in Literary Ecology: Simply put, eco-criticism is the study of the relationship between literature and physical environment. Just as feminist criticism examines language and literature from a gender conscious perspective, and Marxist criticism brings an awareness of modes of production and economic class to its reading of texts, eco-criticism takes an earth-centred approach to literary study. Garrard also adds that eco-criticism is closely related to environmentally oriented developments in philosophy and political theory. So eco-criticism may be interpreted as the analysis of a literary text from the point of view of an ecologist. Another epoch making writing that has relevance in our interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Simon C. Estok’s research paper titled Shakespeare and Ecocriticism: An Analysis of â€Å"Home† and â€Å"Power† in King Lear in which the author explains the key terms â€Å"Anthropocentrism†, â€Å"Biocentrism/ Ecocentrism† and â€Å"Ecophobia†. Agreeing with Greg Garrard, Estok says that ecocriticism is not simply the study of nature or natural things in literature; rather it is any theory that is committed to effecting change by analysing the function – thematic, artistic, social, historical, ideological, theoretical, or otherwise— the natural environment, or aspects of it, represents in documents that contribute to material practices in material world. The explanation of the term ‘ecophobia’ is also very much necessary in our revaluation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Estok thinks that â€Å"ecophobia is the fear of loss of agency and control to Nature†. This ecophobia, found in both Oberon and Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, gives birth to various conflicts, both inner and outer, or, to say more explicitly, psychological and social (which includes ecological aspects also) and this sociological aspects of the play justify the contemporaneity of the bard. Some minor research works have been done on this particular topic on national and international levels. Some research papers have been published on eco-criticism in Shakespeare’s dramas in some journals; mention may be made of the one written by Dr. Subh Brat Sarkar, Rishi Bankim Chandra College, Naihati, W. B. The paper already written by the present researcher and published in the Research Spectrum (August-2012 Issue) contains some hints of the Eco-criticism in Shakespeare’s plays as seen by Rabindranath Tagore. You read "A Midsummer Night’s Dream: an Ecological Interpretation" in category "Essay examples" Tagore considered it to be a kind of colonialism. According to him colonialism is not only the subordination of a weaker nation by a powerful one but the subordination of nature by human beings. Tagore also probably finds the ‘ecologist Shakespeare’ as in As You Like It, The Tempest etc. According to Nirmal Selvamony, the humans have introduced a hierarchy in nature. In that the humans have placed the domesticated animals higher than the wild animals. â€Å"Even animals were ranged in hierarchic order, the domestic and the wild† (Selvamony 4). But in A Midsummer Night’s Dream the role of the dominating power is taken by the fairies and the inferior race is the human beings. The fairies have occupied the topmost position in the hierarchy of Nature and they subordinate man and they quarrel in order to decide who will ‘domesticate’ the Indian boy who is the representative of the colonized people. This kind of colonialism found in Nature may be termed ‘Ecocolonialism’ or ‘Eco-imperialism’. In a supernatural drama like the present one the imperialists are the fairies but in reality they are the mighty people and the colonized ones may be the flora and fauna or even linguistically, culturally, racially, socially, politically, religiously or financially weaker section of the people. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream an ecologist easily finds plenty of materials relevant not only to the students of literature but of science, especially ecology also. The human beings in the person of the Indian boy or the European lovers are merely playthings to the mighty fairies. The fairies play with the humans for their own pleasure and showing their might and not for the amusement of the humans and they do it from anthropocentric point of view. In his Master’s Degree dissertation paper, (University of South Florida) Roy Patricia points out the environmental issues in MND by referring to â€Å"Folk Medicine and the Four Fairies of A Midsummer Night’s Dream,† by Lou Agnes Reynolds and Paul Sawyer who have recovered the fairies from evil associations by casting them as herbal doctors. The article points to the strong early modern interest in the medicinal use of plants and finds that, by the use of this imagery, Shakespeare imbues his fairy characters and their natural remedies with beneficial, medicinal properties. Reynolds and Sawyer’s points are well taken, but we can develop them even further. Not only do the four attendant fairies – Cobweb, Mustardseed, Peascod and Mote – represent fairy medicine but all the actions in the forest also act therapeutically upon the lovers. The inversion of love-roles and the dreams of the lovers depend upon Oberon’s extensive knowledge of the herbal lore of his world. As Oberon himself states: â€Å"Fare thee well, nymph [Helena]. Ere he do leave this grove / Thou shalt fly him, and he shall seek thy love. (2. 1. 245-6). In Act-1I, scene-i of from the speech of Puck we come to know that the king, Oberon is angry with the queen, Titania as she has seized away a boy from India and made him her servant. â€Å"For Oberon is passing fell and wrath, / Because she as her attendant hath / A lovely boy, stolen from an Indian king†. But the king wants to roam about the forests (Nature), along with the boy. As a result whenever they meet, they quarrel. Titania also alleges him of emptying of the venom of jealousy. She says that whenever they meet they quarrel and as a result the wind cannot sing the song of peace and is sucking the fog from the surface of the seas and the water level of the seas has been raised up; the natural system has been disrupted, resulting in untimely flood and thereby destruction of vast area of crops and extinct of a number of species. The ever smiling spring, the scorching summer, the frowning autumn and the cruel winter have changed their plight and so people cannot identify them. Titania confesses that they are responsible for this unholy variation of the cycle of seasons. The people cannot endure the change of the cycle of seasons; suffer from untimely winter and also various kinds of diseases due to the change and endangered bio-diversity. In reply to the allegation of the queen, the king urges her to correct the ecological imbalance as she has the power to remedy. The reason of their quarrel is also clear to the readers—possession of the boy kidnapped from India. Here the quarrel is between a power that has deprived the creature of his natural habitat and made him her servant and the eco-friendly power that is keen to roam about the forests, along with the innocent creature. But none is ready to provide the boy with absolute freedom and so their quarrel does not come to an end here. The king requests the queen to hand the boy over to him but she is too obstinate to nod. She frankly declares that she cannot lose her control over the boy even if she is given the whole fairy land. So Oberon decides to use tricks. He advises Puck to extract the juice of a certain flower which would act like black magic and leave its evil influence on Titania’s eyes, if administered properly. It would also be able to invert the usual behaviour and natural instinct of a person as in the modern age we see the evil influence of narcotics especially in the third world countries. The harmful effect of the use of drugs on eco system is mainly felt in the developing countries. Again Titania, admits that their quarrel has destroyed the usual course of the natural phenomena and nature has undergone vast changes, creating ocean of troubles for human beings. In Act-1, Scene-ii (Lines 81-117) Titania, the Queen of the fairies alleges that their quarrel has destroyed the usual habits of the natural phenomena and Nature has undergone vast changes, creating ocean of troubles for human beings. It may be considered Shakespeare’s anticipation of what McKibben says in his book The End of Nature (1990): We have changed the atmosphere, and thus we are changing the weather. By changing the weather we make every spot on earth man-made or artificial. We have deprived nature of its independence, and that is fatal to its meaning. Nature’s independence is its meaning; ithout it there is nothing but us. (McKibben 1990: 54) In this connection it may be recalled that India was a favourite commercial place to the Western countries form the time of ancient history. And for the sole possession of India several wars were for between the English and the French and others. The Indian boy in the play is symbolically a colony, an ideal place for busi ness. Now-a-day it may be a typical Indian plant for whose patent the economic colonialists are ever fighting among themselves and in order to supersede one another destroying the eco system of the whole globe. Recently we witnessed the war between Iraq and U. S. A. Various reasons may be found out but the naked truth is that the sole reason of the notorious war is nothing but the shameless effort of control over the petroleum mines of the Arabian countries. When the two â€Å"do square, that all their elves for fear/ Creep into acorn cups and hide them there†. The peaceful people whenever get frightened, seek refuge in nature and it may be kept in mind that the best remedy of various pollutions including noise pollution is plantation. Nature is the man’s ultimate refuge because only nature can provide the human beings with eternal pleasure, both physical and mental. Puck also confesses that he, in order to make a fun and to show his prowess, perturbs the natural habits of an object both animate and inanimate. In modern age the modern Pucks very often destroy the Nature and subordinate the creatures of Nature very often out of fun. Examples may be given of the tortured animals in the circus shows, poachers’ activities etc; moreover, we torture the animals in the zoo. Keeping bird cages is a favourite but cruel hobby of a kind of people even after the passage of law against it. It is not only inhuman and unlawful but harmful to bio-diversity also. Recently a television channel telecast a live show of beating thousands of innocent seals to death in Antarctica by a community as it is the annual festival of the community. The pain of the poor seals, especially the half dead ones, the fear of the eco system to be disturbed, the melting of the glaciers and thereby upheaval of the sea level cannot render them anxious of the future of the earth. In this post-Modern age MND is quite relevant and significant since we witness the ecological imbalance, extinction of a large number of species, climatic change, global warming, uprising of the sea level, earth quake, tsunami, El Nino etc. The reason behind such troubles may be, along with the others, the wars (Gulf war, the long war between Iran and Iraq and of course the two World Wars), nuclear bomb testing and above all merciless deforestation. Here in the speech of Titania we seem to hear the voice of an environment scientist or of an ecologist. It may be noted that the more mighty the power, the more strong a destroyer is he in this post-Modern Age. Probably Shakespeare anticipated the natural problems created by the super-human power. The Titanias now-a-days are the war-mongers greedy of absolute power, who seldom think of the future of the globe. So in this age of science and technology the revaluation of the plays of Shakespeare is very much significant. In the same Act and scene the speech of Oberon (L-176–185) is also significant. He speaks of the juice of a flower that is able to hypnotize any man or woman and make him/her fall in love with any creature seen first. But the remedy is known to Oberon only. So it may be supposed that he wants to administer the cunning trick only to destroy the natural habit of a creature and to apply his remedy and thereby to prove his power. In the post-Modern age of economic colonialism this cunning theory is felt to have come back, but with a new dimension. For example the parthenium plant has allegedly come from U. S. A. As found in an e-article (http://www. streetdirectory. om) It appears that Parthenium is not native to India, but it came with the imported wheat as a mixture, when the US sent wheat to India under PL 480 (Public Law 480 passed in 1954 to give food grains to developing countries) in 1956. However this concept was contradicted by some as not the real story because Parthenium was present in India even in 1951 itself. Some people allege that this plant causes a sthma whose medicine would be made in USA and so in order to sell the medicine and to prevail over the subcontinent, the Americans sent the parthenium seeds as adulteration with wheat seeds. So the purpose is to make the Indians asthma patients and then to sell to them asthma medicine. But we should not engage ourselves in this controversy, since we are not talking of international politics but of literary criticism. Here, in the drama the role of Oberon is like that of a modern capitalist who uses his cunning method in order to prove his supremacy and thereby dominate over the comparatively weaker sections and he is doing this out of ecophobia. Ultimately Oberon, the king realizes the harmful effect of his sports and then he feels sorry and takes the responsibility and so urges his assistant to correct the mistakes. He also pacifies his quarrel with Titania, once again with the help of the same narcotics. Here we see the constructive use of the herbs. Thus the play ends with an optimistic note and indirectly upholds the banner of Nature which is the best remedy for the revival of the impaired eco system. It also opines that man cannot remain happy by subordinating nature. Now in the age of global warming the plays of Shakespeare deserve a re-reading. One may recall the peaceful atmosphere in the Forest of Arden (As You Like It) and realize that subordination of nature cannot bring us mental peace as Tagore realized. He establishes his opinion by citing examples from As You Like It, Sakuntala etc. In the concluding song Puck urges the audience to consider the play to be a dream. We may do but it would not be an overstatement to consider it to be a dream of an ecologist because in the play we see what an ecologist would think of the vast change taken place in environment due to the modern leaders of the planet. Steven Donosos interview Essay Example For Students

Steven Donosos interview Essay In Steven Donosos interview Beyond Happiness and Unhappiness: An Interview with Spiritual Teacher Eckhart Tolle, the aim of Tolles teachings are shared. Tolle expresses his views on ones spiritual awakening, individual transformation and human consciousness, by commenting how society influences ones sense of identity through family, past experiences, technology, and belief systems. During ones journey to establish and define his/her sense of self, one accepts that the Now and only the Now exists and thoughts are hindrances. There are truths and limitations to Tolles views. Ones sense of self stems from the process of procreation, enculturation, and socialization of the family unit, which initially begins once an individual learns what his/her name is by his/her parents. Tolle gives a behavioral explanation for this, claiming an individual is conditioned to identify himself/herself under a false pretense. Ones sense of identity is shaped by the different things that people tell about who and his/her past experiences; these things are labels and judgments reinforced by what one learns from others and personal encounters (6). As consequence to other peoples perception of ones identity, the individual has a constant need to fulfill their expectations through enhancement. Yet past experiences, according to Tolle, do not occur to an individual for he/she does not experience any passage of time, except one state called the present moment of life, the Now. Tolle is correct in the sense that family, friends, and other people shape ones identity, although he does not acknowledge other factors that may influence ones sense of self, such as the era one lives in nor the environment. With these factors and many others, an individual decides for himself/herself who he/she is and creates his/her own identity, not a fictitious creation as Tolle describes, through expression and action (6). Tolle goes on to say that science and technology, although which fostered innovative inventions, also has its disadvantages. Tolle views that once technology, an expression of thought, is applied to human selfishness, it becomes a magnification of destruction and a component of human madness. Thoughtful processes of scientific application for self interests obstructs alertness; more science, more technology produces less awareness of ones self and place in the present moment. There is truth to what Tolle says about technology being a destructive weapon due to humans lack of awareness. Humans are oblivious to the human madness is threatening to destroy the planet by preoccupying themselves with continuous inventions to better human life rather than focusing on the destructive effects of the inventions on the world like in WWI and in the Iraq war (9).

Social Media free essay sample

Social Media: The Overlord of 21st Century Relationships Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Vine, Instagram The list goes on and on. Social media is an ever advancing part of modern society that has not only become a major part of most of our lives but also has played a key role in our relationships. These websites depend on user communication through the internet, which means that nothing is truly face to face. Every message, picture and post can be changed and modified the way the user would like, which can be viewed as either an advantage or disadvantage to the user. Social media also offers convenience and sense of instant gratification as very conversation occurs immediately and quite literally, at the tip of ones fingers, but is it truly worth the toll? The intriguing thing about this concept is that although one has so much control in whats happening, they also have absolutely no control at the same time. We will write a custom essay sample on Social Media or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page All in all, this epidemic, due to its nature of regressing peoples social habits and causing psychological issues, is damaging to relationships. Extensive use of social media can affect peoples social habits for the worse. Justin Marley, an acclaimed psychiatrist says, having another Internet technology that uses peoples ime might mean that they spend much less time with people in face-to face contact people may become deskilled in using verbal and non-verbal methods of communication in real world interactions Real world interactions might take longer, they might occur less frequently or Twitterers might be less likely to be included by their non-Twittering peers. When a persons only contact with people is through the internet, if faced with real life situations they might not be able to communicate in a proper fashion. This is because they are no longer used to normal colloquial anguage but instead text and chat language. This will make them awkward, which consequently makes it harder for them to maintain a relationship. Other evidence of deteriorating social skills is stated, we are hiding behind the cloak of digital text and spell-check to present superior versions of ourselves while using these less intimate forms of communication to accelerate the courting process. (Kutcher 100). When people hide their true selves behind a screen, they wont be that skilled socially since they are not used to it. If they are not able to properly socialize with the people round them, it could cause issues in their connections with other people. Along with causing a downgrade in human social skills, social media creates psychological issues in people, often ones that deal with their personality. Christine Rosen, editor and author, says, A study found that the more time and more friends people had on Facebook, the more likely they were to agree with the statement that others had better happier lives than they did, and the less likely they were to believe that life is fair. (93). When people get such notions of being unhappier than all their friends, heir self-esteem is lowered. This can create feelings of resentment within the person causing them to behave differently with others and thus negatively affecting their relationships. Another author writes, The addictive use of social media may also stem from a fear of being misunderstood. We can edit and re-edit digital messages as much as we like u ntil we decide weve perfectly conveyed our thoughts. We can make ourselves sound intelligent, meaningful, or witty. Cell phones have become the taces ot their users, and messages nave become direct retlections ot our personalities. (Ghuman 110-111). This implies that people are giving themselves a new identity to the users they are communicating with behind the screen. When these people are asked to perform in real life, their social skills wont be effective because theyre so used to portraying themselves as someone else that they arent able to represent their true identity. This could cause a mint-personality or identity crisis for them, which can put a strain on many relationships. The results of this include misunderstandings and confusion, and neither can do good to the relationship. Many would argue that technology helps social media keep people onnected in an easy quick way. Philip Winterburn says, [Social media] tools enable you to identify and Join self-organizing communities that share your interests. Social media can help find people who are similar to you and help broaden ones social network. It can aid people socially and professionally. In addition, some believe it helps keep memories intact, Nearly four years later, I sometimes type his mail address in the search box in my Gmail. Hundreds of results pop up, and Ill pick a few at random to read. (Armendariz 103). Social media offers an unlimited archive of all our online conversations, as long as you can access the account. It can prove helpful to some by showing previous important documents or even old chats with loved ones. Joining social networks where you can meet people who share the same interests as you, is not a bad thing at all; it Just has its few not-so-minor disadvantage. Rosen writes, [Social media] turns the private bonds of friendship and connection into a mass spectator sport, a game in which we are all simultaneously players and viewers (and one in which Facebook and other companies profit richly from our participation). (95). All your relationships and other intimate details of your life are laid out on a public forum for everyone to see, ruining the true essence of romance and friendship. Also, while Gmail or other social medias provide an archive of your past conversations, The power of a hand-written letter is greater than ever. Its personal and deliberate and means more than an e-mail or text ever will. (Kutcher 100). The memories that may be stored with electronics would be no where as dear to one as handwritten love notes or anything similar. Social media is a significant factor in todays current relationships. Although it is an easy form of communication, it can cause a demotion of ones social skills and personality disorders in people which negatively affects relationships. The constant conversations via the internet can result in awkwardness in real life, thus negatively affecting communication and relationships. Moreover, evidence shows that it can cause anxiety and self-esteem issues in people which could even further develop into depression. Although this media can provide easy communication, it is public for everyone to see the intimate moments and may not be as dear of a memory as a andwritten form. Overall, the disadvantages of the use of social media in a relationship outweigh the benefits. Social Media free essay sample In today’s world where on-line business transaction is a norm, Social Media Outlets are sprouting just about every now and then to cater to the demands of the consumer public as well as to provide the means for different businesses to advertise and promote their respective services into the frontlines. Facebook, by far, is presently one of the leading Social Media platforms1 used by businesses to reach-out to consumers and possible business partners. With this growing trend, the conduct of business has greatly evolved from physically exchanging goods and services where the buyer and seller meet-up face-to-face, into the hassle-free on-line transaction and trading. Although these new means has brought about new challenges and risks in the conduct of business, marketing managers still adhere to the basics of running and promoting their respective businesses. These four (4) components are the foundation and guiding principles of a legally astute marketing manager in weighing day to day decisions in today’s modern world. We will write a custom essay sample on Social Media or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The first component is having a set of value-laden attitudes on the importance of the law to the firm’s success. Recognizing the importance of the law serves as the foundation in making all the decisions in every corporation. With this follows the observance of a set of corporate standards and attitudes that is anchored on the legality of each action. At the end of the day, it is not the question of how much you have made for the success of the company, but it is on how you did it. The businesses’ reputation is always at stake most specially when promoting products and services online and this requires a great amount of trust and confidence between the company and the buyer/consumer. Observing the legal aspects in every decision and transaction will greatly build-up the company towards positive growth. Role of a legally astute manager. Different solutions and outcomes are studied well in advance to avoid situations that will put the company at risk in the future. This is done through consultation with business strategist and legal advisors to help determine the efficient and effective ways of dealing business and avoiding possible hindrances. These consultations will also provide the manager important and critical information on the legal aspects of running the business. Having these information will lead to the next component of a legally astute manager which is by having the ability to exercise informed judgment when managing the legal aspects of business. A well-informed manager always makes the best decision and will shoulder the responsibility and the outcome of the company’s decisions. Although managers rely most of the time from their legal advisers in dealing with unexpected hindrances, it is but important for the legally astute manager to have a grasp of understanding the legal aspects of the situation at hand in order to come up with a sound decision. Disputes could highly occur in any online business transaction that is why a legally astute social media marketing manager should be always ready with alternative dispute resolutions. Negotiation is one of these alternative dispute resolutions wherein an agreement is made between the consumer and the service provider on any business venture they both might have agreed upon. These negotiations could be forward-looking or also known as transactional negotiations wherein both parties agreed upon the terms of their relationship and iron out the details of their transaction before they will initiate the deal (Bagley, C. 2013). On the other hand, a negotiation could be backward-looking also known as dispute negotiations wherein parties represented by the consumer and the service provider are already engaged in business go back to a negotiating table to resolve an unexpected issue that transpired after a deal was made and has caused a situation that might affect the successful completion of the business transaction. The critical role of the social media marketing  manager on this kind of alternative dispute resolution is to see to it that a set of agreements has been laid-out between the consumer and the service providers before, during and after they both go into a business transaction that utilizes the social media. Mediation is another method of alternative dispute resolution wherein both parties, the consumer and the service provider, has reached to a point and agreed for a neutral third party, known as the mediator, to mutually resolve an issue that transpired in their transaction. Mediators cannot dictate a solution to a problem, it is the disputing parties involved in a mediation process that should find a resolution to their dispute and agree to abide by it themselves. Mediation provides a fast, simple and inexpensive agreeable solution for parties involved who are willing to settle a dispute an d to maintain the business relationship. Arbitration on the other hand is another type of alternative dispute resolution whereby the parties involved in a dispute agreed to seek the aid of a neutral third party, an arbitrator, to find a resolution for them. In arbitration, the disputing parties should abide to the arbitrator’s decision. Among the three alternative dispute resolutions, the most effective in resolving genuine disputes that arise with consumers who may make purchases from businesses that provide links via social media is the Mediation wherein the social media platform acts as the mediator. A good example is when you buy a product online and it turned out to be something different from what you purchased. You can simply return the item back or have it replaced with the right item through a structured process already laid out and designed by the mediator to fix such disputes. Because business transactions made via the cyberspace are sometimes done between entities coming from different nations and/or states, the federal government can best control the transactions on social media under the implementation of the Commerce Clause. The Commerce Clause is a federal authority that gives Congress the power to regulate all activities that will transpire in the social media market. This power to regulate these activities and transactions involves promulgation of laws that will serve as policies and guidelines for both the consumer public and the service providers in order for them to have a business environment conducive of growth and trust. The three branches of the government have varying significant impacts on the overall transactions conducted via the social media. The Judiciary Branch of the government has the jurisdiction in all cases involving the consumers and service providers whether these transactions may be between entities represented by the state, people within the state and people from foreign nations. The Executive Branch of the government refers to the executive powers of the president and the executive departments and agencies that enforce the laws of the land. This branch is responsible for the execution of orders issued by the Judiciary Branch as well as the implementation of laws and regulations created by the Legislative Branch. On the other hand, the Legislative Branch of the government consists of the House and the Senate, collectively known as the Congress. It is the legislative branch that makes all laws that will govern the land. It is also the Congress that decides and declares war, regulates interstate and foreign commerce and controls fiscal policies. The Legislative Branch has the power that can effectuate the most significant impact on regulating e-commerce and other business transactions via the social media market because the Commerce Clause gives Congress the power to regulate commerce with other nations and between states.

buy custom Conducting an Oral History essay

buy custom Conducting an Oral History essay As a result of the desire to learn more about American history, Oral Interviews proved to be the best mode of extracting information. Not only did it yield more than was needed but I had the opportunity to seek clarification on historical link between the American society and the growing population. This was based on current affairs in relation to the growing economy and employment. The main lessons learnt were on Mexico-United States immigration. This paper provides an insight into the actual oral interview. Towards developing a broad understanding concerning American issues like current affairs and historical connections, effects of immigration on modern American history, and American life and culture, it is important to carry out an oral interview. The oral history interview in this report is enhanced with the intent to examine American history from a wide perspective. With this understanding, this report accurately presents a detailed oral interview concerning issues of America. The name of the interviewee is James and he is aged seventy five years, with vast experience on the subject of the above mentioned American issues. This explains the best reason as to why James is chosen over other people. The report comprises different types of questions asked to the interviewee, the type of answers provided, experience gained from the interview, and new things learnt on the subject of history in general and with reference to the interviewee in particular. Type of Questions Asked in the Interview In any given interview, briefing the interviewee in relation to the subject matter is always critical; as this opens ways through understanding each other is enhanced. In this scenario, briefing James the interviewee about the assignment on history course is the first thing before commencing on the questions. After making a disclosure to the interviewee, the basic questions asked revolve around issues relating to American history. For instance, the general conversation in the interview concerns how the interviewee life was during his childhood and concerning where he was during the occurrence of these American events (Baker, 2008). This is in addition to, questioning the interviewee his thoughts pertaining to the above American historic events that he lived through. The basic questions in this interview relate to the effects of immigration on modern American history, and American life and culture. For instance, what are the ffects of immigration on modern American History (Davidson, 2006)? How does the American life and culture relate to the issue of immigration? The above questions are asked to the interviewee in a polite language, in order to give him chance to respond to the succinctly. Type of Answers Provided in the Interview After having a deep conversation with the interviewee, various answers regarding the above asked question and which relate to the American history are provided in a logic manner. According to the provided answers, it is clear that American current affairs and historical connections are contributing factors resulting to major developments in the country nowadays. For instance, some of the provided answer relating to the subject on effects of immigration on modern American history clearly enlighten on how immigration is affecting the economy of the United States (Davidson, 2006). From the interview, I noted that some of the effects of immigration on modern history of America relate to issues pertaining to the economy and employment. The answers show that the effects of immigration and the United States economy are largely categorized as a theme of debate, as this is directly links to the economy and politics of the nation. It is quite understandable according to the answers of the interview that the effects of immigration contribute both negatively and positively in the growth of United States economy (Rush, 2007). As well, American life and culture defines the way in which the migrants relate with the natives. Lesson Learnt from the Experience of the interview Interviews provide most excellent chances for gaining experience concerning various subjects. From this interview, I learnt that some of the current affairs in the American history have a basic connection with historic affairs. For instance, the issue pertaining to the economy is a current issue in the government of the U.S. However, the same issue traces back to the time of immigrants and colonization. This is a clear indication that, the presence of a growing economy is due to the occurrence of immigrants in the history of the United States. The fact that immigrants provide labor for low wages is a reason for a growing economy in the United States. It is quite obvious that history plays a crucial role in determining how the future will be like. Therefore, American history of immigrants is a determining factor of the economy of the nation. New Things Learnt Conncerning History and the Interviewee From this interview, it is clear that immigration is a term defining the movement of inhabitants into a given area. This is the introduction of new people into a given new population; hence the procedure occurs due to several factors. The United States is a major destination for human being immigration. The US-Mexico remains a favorite improvement as it separates individuals living in a wealthy and a developing country (Baker, 2008). The trouble of immigration remains noteworthy with Mexicans crossing the border in look for greener pastures and as well smuggle drugs into the wealthy state. The Mexico - United States Border has a very extensive record. Economic growth in the United States saw Mexico lag at the back, and so resulting in economic differences. Mexico remains disreputable for drug manufacture and smuggling and the existence of a set market and job chances in the United States widens the range of the difficulty (Davidson, 2006). Diverse movies and manuscripts are written showing how the border continues to affect the lives of a human being living on both sides. The creation of the barrier seems essential to restrain with illegal migration and smuggling of drugs and other resources. The interview therefore gives a lot of information concerning the border and its crashes on the lives of the many people. The history of the United States and Mexico revolves much around the blockade, and also plays a main role towards improving the associations between the two nations in terms of trade and economy. With regards to interview, the interviewee has vast experience concerning American issues pertaining to current affairs and historical connections, effects of immigration on modern American history, and American life and culture (Rush, 2007). Through clearly analyzing points and giving examples where applicable, the interviewee shows the major transitions occurring in the American history. Conclusion From the above interview, it is quite intelligible that the effects of immigration result to both negative and positive changes in the growth of U.S economy. American issues akin to current affairs and historical connections, effects of immigration on modern American history, and American life and culture are more related to the nations politics and economy. Conducting an oral history interview is critical towards understanding the past and comparing with the future. Buy custom Conducting an Oral History essay

Banned and Censored Music

The discussion of whether or not the censorship of music is constitutionally sound has come about.   This problem has been around since the beginning of music in one way or another.   The fact of the matter is that there is technically no such thing as the censorship of music in the United States(Banned Music 1).   Although that is supposedly the case, that statement can be very misleading.   It is stated in the First Amendment of the United States   Constitution that every American is granted the Freedom Of Speech.   This includes all musicians.   Contrary to this statement, there has been a numerous amount of cases in which a song or music group has been banned of either their right to perform their act on stage, or the sale of their album has been condemned as   illegal.   The troubling fact about music censorship is that music is considered to be an art form, and there are certain laws set up to protect art from being censored. People should have the right to ch oose what type of music they want to listen to in this country. Plagiarism Detection >Censorship is the control of what people may say or hear, write or read, or see or do.   Censorship can affect books, newspapers, magazines, motion pictures, radio and television programs, and speeches.   (World Book 345)  Most of the early problems with the censorship of music came about in the early 1950s.   This was the first real era of rock and roll in America. In 1954 a Michigan Congresswoman tried to pass a bill that stated that the mailing of any explicit or pornographic album could lead to some hefty jail time, up to five years if convicted. When looking back, the 50s had some of the most laughable incidences when songs were banned.   There was a Billie Holiday song by the name of Love For Sale, none of the radio stations were allowed to play it because of its strong sexual content and its depiction of prostitution.   In even a funnier case there was a song by the name of Tran sfusion banned because it was felt that a blood transfusion was not a laughing matter.   Perhaps the most farcical form of censorship in the 50s came about in 1957 when Elvis Presley was scheduled to perform on the Ed Sullivan show.   Cameramen were instructed not to film any of Elviss lower body because his dancing was considered inappropriate for the viewing audience(Elvis To Ice-T 3). What is so offensive about that to have it censored from the public. Times have changed though, today we just sit back and laugh at that type of censorship. The 1960s brought about a new wave of censorship.   During the 1960s, popular music diversified, and so did the censors. Although the censorship supposedly diversified, the uncalled-for censorship of certain music continued.   In 1964 the state of Indiana banned the song Louie Louie because they felt that it had some sexual content in it.   But if you listen to the words it is obvious that sexual content is no where to be found. In 196 7, the Rolling Stones were forced to change the lyrics of a song in order to perform it on national television because, of course, it had sexual content.   The song was called Lets Spend The Night Together and they were forced to say Lets Spend Some Time Together. Later that decade John Lennon and Yoko Onos album Two Virgins featured a naked picture of the two.   These albums were confiscated before they even had a chance to hit the record stores.   There was one Chicago retailer shut down by the vice squad for carrying this album(The 1960s 1). A piece of art is destroyed if altered. What would Michael Angelos famous sculpture The Thinker be like if somebody carved clothes on to him.   it wouldnt be what he attended and therefore   the art piece would loose most of its significance.People often times do not get offended as easily as they use to. In the early 1990s an album released by Nirvana featured a naked baby on the cover.   There was very little controversy over t he cover and there was no ban of the record sale. Unlike the 1950s, the 60s proved to have a few more controversial topics. That goes to show how people change their views about morality as time passes. The 1970s proved to have just as many controversial cases about censorship, as the fifties and sixties.   In April of 1971 Officials in Illinois released a list of popular music that contained drug references.   The list included the popular childrens song Puff The Magic Dragon and the Beatles Yellow Submarine, (The 1970s 1) This is so absurd.   These officials must really have had a lot of time on their hands to sit around and turn around the words to these wonderful children songs. If somebody wanted they could depict violating thoughts or images out of many different forms of art.The censorship of music only increased as the years passed by. In 1981 Olivia Newton Johns song Physical was banned because it was believed to have strong sexual content and this was considered to b e more than inappropriate for the Mormon religion. 1985 brought about one of the most prominent groups to support censorship in music.   This group was the Parents Music Resource Group.   This group was headed by Tipper Gore.   This group was later named the Parents Music Resource Center.  Ã‚   The PMRCs primary focus was getting record companies to monitor and rate their artists releases with a system similar to the MPAA system for movies.   This group brought about some problems about two types of music, rap and heavy metal.   The PMRC hit them so hard that it became very hard to find a rap or heavy metal record in stores.   In order to get around this many record labels released two versions of the same album, one was the original album and the second one was an edited version.   The PMRC created a type of stickering system.   Under the sticker system if an album was believed to be inappropriate, a sticker would be placed on the album cover.   This sticker wou ld indicate that the album should not be purchased by anyone under the age of eighteen due to explicit lyrics or violent behavior.   This was a big step backwards for those who were against the censorship of music.   This stickering system did not include the censorship of pornography.   In 1987 a singer by the name of Jello Biafra was arrested for the distribution of pornography.   He had a picture of a naked lady on the cover and was found to be inappropriate for the public.   These albums were later seized and his band eventually broke up.(The 1980s 1) Pornography and prostitution are often times found to be legal   in America, but a persons constitutional right of speaking freely can be outlawed by the same government, that really doesnt make since! The 90s by is the most controversial decade as far as censorship goes. With all of the Knew and   diversified types of music there is sure to be differences in taste.   The widely known incident about the subject of banned music took place between the police in Dade County Florida and the rap group 2 Live Crew.   2 Live Crew released a very risquà © album by the name of Me So Horny   The record sale and distribution of this album were deemed illegal in Florida and Alabama just to name a couple of states.   2 Live Crew were also arrested in Florida at a concert.   The police claimed that the performance was too obscene for the general public.   This led to 2 Live Crews next album to be titled Banned In The USA.   Later on that year rapper Ice Ts album Freedom of Speech was banned.   Its lyrics were also considered to be too obscene.   (Music Censorship: Elvis to Ice-T 5) It seems that rap music is taking the fall for music censorship.   Public Enemy, another rap group, has recently been under some heat for a video and an album they just recently released.   The name of the album By the Time I Get to Arizona features a video in which it depicts the governor of Arizona as a Da vid Duke type of character.   Public Enemy claims that it is just trying to get its point across that it is wrong that the state of Arizona does not celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day(Loder, Censorship, A Town Meeting).   Evan Mecham, the former governor of Arizona had this to say about the matter, I could not understand how anyone could have the gall to market something like that and call it entertainment,(Gregory Lewis 1).   It should be added that Mecham was impeached for abolishing Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday.   So I guess that you could say that Public Enemy was trying to get a point across and they succeeded. In the mid 1990s many large chain stores took a major role in the sales of these so called obscene albums.   Such stores as Wal Mart and K Mart decided not to sale any records that proved to be obscene.   This meant that if a record label wanted to sell a lot of copies of an album, they would have to start making sure they were acceptable for the general public. Since the Wal- Marts and K -Marts were so big it would be really hard to sale a large quantity of the albums at record stores.      As you can see, censorship is a big part of the music industry these days.   Obviously censorship has been around for a while, but is it all that it is cracked up to be?There are many groups or coalitions who believe the answer to this question is no.   There is a group by the name of the Free Music Coalition, based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that is always fighting for the right of musicians.   They feel that the censorship of music is wrong and it is bad for the music community.   The Free Music Coalition has three basic goals: 1.   To educate the public about the seriousness of the threats we are facing.   Church groups, politicians, and the police have formed a network to censor music.   Fans need to understand this to effectively fight back.   2.   To organize a counter attack.   To be successful everyone must band together, only then will activities such as letter writing campaigns, petitions, boycotts and demonstrations produce results.   3.   Make censorship illegal.   The First Amendment is supposed to protect our freedom of expression, but lawmakers and police are able to twist the laws to stop ideas that they find dangerous or offensive.   What we need is a law that prohibits the censoring and labeling of records, books, arts, or films.   Only then can artists create without a cloud of fear hanging over them.   Only then can we enjoy the music we want to hear ( Fighting Censorship 1). Plagiarism Detection >The Free Music Coalition is against the censorship of music because censorship is unfair to musicians.   In a recent case in Michigan it wasnt a bands lyrics that got banned, it was one of their T-shirts.   A young boy went to school with the inscription Korn on his plain black shirt. He was asked to change the shirt, and if he didnt, he would be sus pended (Music Censorship: Elvis to Ice -T 12). This incident can be more rightly justified; the Offense Principle states that a person can be stopped from doing want he or she wants do if it is going to offend others(Ethics: Theory and Contemporary Issues 203). Everybody has a choice about what kind of music they want to listen to. My friend is big into rap music, and I am offended by the language used in it.   It is his choice to buy and to listen to it, and it is mine not to. Him buying it doesnt affect me, so there for it should be his right.   If nobody is affected   by a persons actions then it should be allowed. The First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution states pacifically that each person has the right to freedom of speech.    Congress shall make no law representing an   establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free   exercise there of; or abridging the freedom of speech,   or of the press; or of the right of the people living   peaceably to assemble, an d petition the government for   a redress of grievances.   If a person is not allowed to express themselves and their feelings vividly, then they are not being given the right that is rightfully theirs.    Artists have never had their drawings censored because they are inappropriate, and boxers dont get censored because their sport is too violent, so why should musicians?   Sure, some of the music out there is not appropriate for little kids to hear, but it is not the musicians responsibility to make sure youngsters do not hear it. So, for those people who believe the censorship of music is correct, maybe they should take their own advice and start censoring what they and their kids buy, and quit worrying about what others are buying. America is based on individual rights and individual differences.   Censoring the music in this country would go against everything America is all about. People should be able to choose want they want or dont want.

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS AND FINANCE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS AND FINANCE - Essay Example The exchange rate of the local currency comes down due to interplay of demand and supply. The floating exchange rate system based on demand and supply is a self-adjusting mechanism in market economy. But, stability in exchange rate is very important for the growth of the economy. Therefore, the central bank of a country exercises its monetary authority to ensure that the local currency is traded around the desired or target exchange rate. The central bank closely monitors movements of exchange rate of the country’s currency. It will intervene in the market by resorting to open market purchase or sale of currencies to maintain stability or for influencing the exchange rate of the local currency in relation to foreign currencies. Spanjers (2009, p. 10) stated â€Å"As the expectation of stable exchange rates tends to promote trade and thus welfare, the monetary authority of each country commits itself to exchange rate targets.† Central bank also in its liquidity managemen t through monetary policies influences money supply in the country with a view to regulate interest rates and keep inflation under control. Money supply in a country will also influence the behaviour of exchange rates. The interest rates and inflation are closely linked to the behaviour of the exchange rate. Gold standard system In Bretton Woods Conference in 1914 the participant countries have agreed to adopt gold standard system which envisaged economic discipline among the nations. But, it could not succeed in achieving the objectives mainly due to currency devaluation spree post-World War-I by the countries to maintain or improve their exports. While devaluation strategy was adopted to make the countries’ products competitive in the world market, in order to make the local products more competitive locally, they also introduced trade restrictions which made the imports costlier. These measures taken by the governments for protecting their national economies had severe imp act on the international trade. To stem this tide in international economy, International Monetary Fund was created in Bretton Woods in 1944 with the aim of preserving global monetary order. The exchange rates of the currencies fixed in relation to US Dollar or gold could not work smoothly for a long period. Defending these fixed exchange rates has become increasingly difficult due to several factors. Under the fixed exchange rate regime the country has to continuously monitor the system and impose several restrictions on transactions involving foreign exchange. These restrictions are likely to encourage black market operations in foreign exchange. The question of devaluation of the currency for a country with fragile economy is the greatest cause for concern. The countries’ current account imbalances caused failure of the system because under consistent deficit in current account a currency cannot be kept artificially at a higher exchange rate. Stability in Floating exchange rates and economy The stability factor, being the major concern relating to exchange rates, could not be addressed in floating exchange rate system based on demand and supply for currencies as well. The process of self adjustment expected to come into play is affected by several factors. For example, when a currency becomes weak, the imports become costlier and exports more profitable and the volume of exports is expected to increase. The increased demand for local currency due to exports and

Ethical or Unethical Argument Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Ethical or Unethical Argument - Essay Example Ethical arguments are based on evidence or fact which can be proven and cannot be challenged by multiple people. The evidence or fact is such that has been scientifically proven or is a fact based on recorded events that cannot be questioned. However, arguments based on mere opinion are those that are based on a person’s personal perception of things and require individual analysis. Inflicting your opinion on other people or trying to mold their opinion according to yours without providing facts or reasons is considered unethical (Vaughn, pp. 236-237). Some arguments contain sound reasoning or logic and consider others viewpoint within them before drawing to a conclusion. These arguments are based on logic, fact, and contain proof of reasoning instead of relying upon a single person’s judgment. Unethical arguments do not consider the viewpoint or perception of others and lack sound reasoning. They are based upon mere opinion or a single person’s judgment. They may be based upon inferences or predictions and may also carry the elements of prejudice and biases. Most of the time, unethical ways of argument cause harm to a certain cause without due reason and are concerned with the most trivial concepts (Stevenson, pg. 15). Hitler’s argument against the Jews and the argument for breeding a â€Å"better race† was an argument based primarily on his own opinion and prejudices. Other arguments which stereotype certain religions, races, ethnicities, and people, in general, are also considered unethical arguments as they are based upon mere opinion rather than objective fact which are non-refutable (Stevenson, pg. 22). In order to argue in an ethical manner, a person must consider the reason for which they are arguing. The purpose of the argument or the outcome that wants to be achieved must be such that must not cause undue harm to anyone and must not hurt anyone’s beliefs without due reason.

Using the Right Storage Device at the Right Time Essay Example for Free

Using the Right Storage Device at the Right Time Essay The advent of technology enabled us to have an easier and more comfortable life. Computers have been assisting us in almost all of our daily tasks, from typing to storing our files. Due to the ever developing computers and programs, files have evolved into different forms and sizes. This eventually led to the different forms of storage devices that are applicable to certain storage requirements. There are different classifications of storage devices depending on their access, memory retention and mode of data storage. The first classification is based mode of access by the central processing unit; and these are the primary and secondary storage. Primary storage, also called main storage or memory, is the part in a computer where data is kept for quick access by the CPU. In personal computers and laptops, it is most commonly called as the random access memory or RAM. Meanwhile, secondary storage, also known as auxiliary storage, is the data storage device not used as the primary storage. It is also known as external storage. Examples of this are hard disks, floppy disk, CD’s, DVS’s, magnetic tapes and flash drives (Search Storage, 2005). Another classification is based on memory retention. Volatile storage devices are those that do not retain data when the computer is shut down and an example of this is the common RAM. On the other hand, non-volatile storage devices are those that retain data even in the absence of a power supply and examples of these are hard disks and CD’s (MSD, 2006). The last type of classification is based on the mode of data storage and these are the magnetic and optical storage. Magnetic storage devices use magnetic disks that contain iron particles which can be polarized into a direction by a magnetic charge. The organization of the particles creates the data that is stored on that disk. Meanwhile, optical devices are high-capacity storage devices that uses reflected light in reading data. To store data, the metallic surface of the disc is covered with small dent (or pits) and flat (or land) spots. When the light is directed into a pit, the light is not reflected back thus there is a bit value of zero (or off) and when the light is directed to a land, the light is reflected, thus having a bit value of one (or on). The arrangement of these lands and pit determines the data stored (CM Lab). Due to the many forms of these storage devices, it is appropriate to know what situations are deemed fit of unfit for a specific type of storage device. In choosing a storage device for a certain job, it is important to take note of some items to ensure the use of the proper storage device. These include knowing how much data is needed to be stored, how fast data should be recovered, what storage devices are available, how automated the data storing process is and how fats the data could be stored (HP). These should be kept in mind in order to optimize your time and your back-up system. Random access memories or RAM’s are the primary memory of the computer. It is the memory used by the operating system of the computer when booting. After the boot, the other areas of the RAM unoccupied by the system become the conventional memory which the computer uses in running programs (MSD, 2006). The advantage of RAM is that if it is increased in a computer, it speeds up the processing of the computer enabling the user to use multiple applications. However, its disadvantage is that it is unusable once the computer is shot down. This means that RAM’s are applicable only in speeding up the processing of the computer and not in data storage. Hard disks are secondary storage devices that are used as the primary data storage of most computers. It is usually consisted of a number of inflexible platters that stores data electronically. The advantages of hard disks over other data storage devices include huge storage capacity and fast access time, cheaper on per megabyte basis and are more reliable since they are better protected and are made to be more durable. However, they still have disadvantages, such as non-portability (for installed drives), less security of data due to vulnerability to virus attacks and head crash due to contaminants and extreme shocks (Wong). This means that hard disks are efficient only on storing of huge data for relatively short periods of time. Floppy disks are flexible plastic disks that are coated with magnetic material use to store data magnetically. It is most commonly known as the diskette. They are very popular in the 1990’s, however, they not anymore considered standard today due to its more efficient alternatives (MSD, 2006). The advantages of diskettes include portability and cheapness, random access of data, write-protection feature and ease in transferring data from one computer to another. However, it also has its disadvantages, and these are its non-durability, slow access time and very limited storage capacity (Wong). This means that diskettes are appropriate only for small and temporary data storage. Compact disks are optical devices that stores data. They use microscopic pits and lands in storing data. Their advantages include portability, relatively large storage capacity, a relatively fast access time, and permanent data storage. Meanwhile, its disadvantages include its non-reusability and relatively slow writing time (Wong). This means that CD’s are more applicable in storing permanent data that requires no editing such as software installers and audio files for longer periods of time. Magnetic tapes are strips of plastic coated with magnetic material and are capable of storing huge amounts data. Their advantages include huge capacity, cheapness, reliability and universality; and its disadvantages include sequential accessing and frequent cleaning (MSD, 2006). This means that tapes are more appropriate for backing-up huge amounts of data for relatively long period of time. Flash drives are storage devices that used flash memories or chips to store electronic data. They are the new form of data storage devices. Its advantages include compactness, portability, fast data writing and access and consists no mobile parts. Its disadvantages include expensiveness and limited data storage (MSD, 2006). This means that flash drives are more appropriate in storing medium size data that needs to be transported or transferred to other computers.

Al Capone Essay -- essays research papers

Alphonse "Scar Face" Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1899, to an immigrant family. He was born with type O blood. People supposedly born with O type blood tend to have the drive to succeed in leadership quality. They are strong, certain, and powerful, as will be seen later. However Al Capones leadership was taken to the extreme. (4 Blood Types, 4 Diets Eat Right 4 Your Type) Certainly many Italian immigrants like immigrants of all nationalities, frequently came to the new world with very few assets. Many were peasants escaping lack of opportunity in rural Italy. When they came to America they ended up as laborers, because they could not speak or write English. This was not the case with Capones family. Gabrielle Capone, Alponse’s father was one of 43,000 Italians who arrived in the United States in 1894. He was a barber by trade and could read and write his native language. He was from the village of Castellmare Distabia, sixteen miles south of Naples. (Encyclopedia Of World Crime) Gabrielle who was thirty years old when he arrived in America brought with him his pregnant twenty seven year old wife Teresina, his two year old son Vincenzo and his infant son Raffaele. Along with thousands of other Italians, the Capone family moved to Brooklyn near the Brooklyn navy yard. (Encyclopedia Of World Crime) Gabrielle’s ability to read and write allowed him to get a job in a grocery store, until he was able to open his own barber shop. Teresa in spite of a growing bunch of boys, took in sewing piece work to add to the family helpings. Her third son Salvatore was born in 1895. Her fourth son and first to be born in the new world was born on January 17, 1899. His name was Alponse. The Capones were a quiet, conventional family. Laurence Bellgreen says "The mother†¦ kept to herself". Her husband Don Gabrielle made more of an impression(Blood Letters and Bad Men). Nothing about the Capone family was inherently disturbed. The children and parents were close, there was no apparent mental disability, and no traumatic event. In May of 1906, Gabrielle became an American citizen. Within the family his children would always be known by their Italian names. Shortly after Al was born, Gabrielle moved the family to a better area in an a... ...s sentenced to eleven years in federal prison. He was fined fifty thousand dollars and charged seven thousand six hundred and ninety two dollars for court costs. In addition to two hundred and fifteen thousand plus interest due back on taxes. The six month contempt of court sentence was to be served concurrently. While awaiting results of appeals, Capone was confined to the Cook County jail. Upon denial of appeals, he entered the United States penitentiary at Atlanta, serving his sentence there at Alcatraz. Following his release, he never publicly returned to Chicago. He had become mentally ill. In 1946, his physician and a Baltimore psychiatrist concluded that he had the mentality of a twelve year old child. Capone resided on Palm Island with his wife and immediate family, in a secluded atmosphere, until his death due to a stroke and pneumonia on January 25, 1947. In conclusion, Al Capone was a very strong, powerful, and deadly man which was seen in many of the cases stated. Al Capone influenced people back then and he will continue to influence people forever.

Comparison of Poems the Magpies and Ozymandias Essay

In the two poems, The Magpies by Denis Glover and Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley a common theme is that of man’s immortality. In The Magpies this theme is made especially apparent through the comparison of the immortality of Elizabeth and Tom with nature’s ability to remain constant due to its continuous regeneration. Meanwhile, in Ozymandias a king has a statue built however just like him the statue does not survive and is actually left abandoned and forgotten in the desert. This theme of immortality is also shown through a range of techniques such as the structure, choice of language, imagery, movement and sounds. Likewise, this theme is illustrated through the distinctive tone of the author in each poem. The poem The Magpies has a very set structure of six four-line stanzas. In each of these stanzas the last two lines describe the sounds of the magpies, while the first two lines are about Tom and Elizabeth. The second line of each stanza also rhymes with the last line of each; â€Å"The magpies said†. For instance in the first stanza the second line is, â€Å"The bracken made their bed†. This rhyming of the lines about Tom and Elizabeth with â€Å"the magpies said† links the two together and creates the idea of the magpies watching everything Tom and Elizabeth do. Likewise the structure of the last two lines being about the magpies enhances the idea that the magpies are constant and despite the time that has passed, â€Å"the pines grew overhead† the magpies are still there while Tom and Elizabeth’s lives come to an end, â€Å"Elizabeth is dead now† The poem Ozymandias is also written in the format of an iambic pentameter and has an irregular rhyming pattern throughout. The rhyming pattern helps to link the poem together and create a sense of flow and almost lyrical rhythm. For example the first line, â€Å"an antique land,† rhymes with the third line, â€Å"on the sand†. The poem is also not broken into stanzas like The Magpies and is instead presented as a sonnet made up of an octet and a sestet. In the octet the question t hat is posed is, ‘who does the statue in the desert represent?’ as the statue is only described as â€Å"trunkless legs of stone† and a â€Å"shatter’d visage†. In the sestet this question is then answered through the quoting of the words found on the plaque on the statue’s pedestal, â€Å"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings†. The structure of this poem is interesting as in the sixth line the poem reads, â€Å"its sculptor well those passions read† however it is not until the tenth line that the man the statue is of is named. This arrangement of the poem creates the idea that although Ozymandias was the one who commissioned the statue to be built and claims it as his, â€Å"Look on my works†; it is not really his works that have survived but those of a nameless sculptor. In the poem, The Magpies the choice of language is interesting as it is very simple and straight to the point. It also has some contradictions in the features used, for example it states â€Å"Elizabeth is dead now† while when describing Tom’s declining mental state it uses the euphemism â€Å"Old Tom went light in the head†. The use of the onomatopoeia of the magpies calls, â€Å"and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle† enhances how irritable the magpie’s calls are and the repetition of this exact same sentence illustrates how the magpies are constant and unchanging. However, the very last refrain of the magpie’s ends with â€Å"the magpies say† which creates the idea that even now and into the future, the magpies will continue to live on the farm that Tom and Elizabeth left so long ago. This is in keeping with the theme of the poem which is man’s mortality as it shows how human lives are limited while nature as a whole is constantly regenerating so can outlast any individual. Unlike The Magpies, the poem Ozymandias uses much more descriptive and poetic language. For instance the country that the traveller is from is described as â€Å"an antique land†. As the reader assumes that the traveller is from the land where the statue stands this metaphor emphasises the id ea that the country has a long, rich history. Likewise, the smashed face of the statue is described as â€Å"a shatter’d visage†. Alliteration is also a language feature that is used regularly throughout this poem. For example the statue is described as having â€Å"a sneer of cold command†. The hard ‘c’ sounds illustrate that Ozymandias was not a kind ruler but one who ruled strongly over his people with very little compassion. In the last two lines of the poem alliteration is also used when describing the physical appearance of the desert such as â€Å"boundless and bare† and â€Å"lone and level†. This use of alliteration emphasises how isolated the statue is and the soft consonant sounds provoke an image of rolling desert plains unbroken by human civilisation. In the poem Ozymandias the use of adjectives to describe the size of the statue, â€Å"vast† and â€Å"colossal†, add to the irony of the piece as despite the statues immense size it is nothing compared to t he magnitude of the desert and regardless of its size it has still been forgotten. This relates to the idea of the mortality of man as although Ozymandias’ statue has survived long after his death his statue does not cause the â€Å"despair† that he hoped it would but instead is now forgotten by most and mocked by the few who have found â€Å"his works†. This also creates an idea of human perception as while Ozymandias saw the statue as threatening, the sculptor saw it as an opportunity to make a mockery of Ozymandias’ egocentric personality. In the poem The Magpies by Denis Glover and Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley a common theme is that of immortality. In both poems this idea is explored through features such as structure and the use of language techniques. The structure of the two poems were different, however each was suited to the authors purpose. For example in The Magpies the author illustrates the theme of human mortality through the comparison of the length of the lives of Elizabeth and Tom with the seemingly endlessness of the presence of the magpies. Meanwhile, in Ozymandias the poem is arranged in a sonnet which allows the author to let the poem flow despite its irregular rhyme pattern. The use of the chosen language techniques in each piece is also necessary for the emphasis of the theme of immortality. For instance in The Magpies the most significant feature is the onomatopoeia of the magpies call. As this refrain is unchanged throughout the poem it illustrates the point that despite man’s best efforts to tame nature it is often possible for a short time as human lives are limited while nature continuously regenerates. In Ozymandias the use of alliteration is essential as it allows for a greater understanding of just how isolated and abandoned the statue is. This in turn creates the idea that although Ozymandias had the statue built to immortalise himself and leave a legacy on earth as he was not the sculptor they are not really his works that remain and are remembered but those of an unnamed artist. Both these poems illustrate how people can spend their time on earth working hard to reach perfection or an ultimate goal but in the end it is often impossible and does not allow them to be any more immortal than the next person. Perhaps then people would do better to accept that their time is restricted and work with these limitations to ensure that their time is not wasted in seeking immortality or creating a useless legacy and instead doing what good they can in the short time that they are given.

Malthus and Africa essays

Malthus and Africa essays Africa, being a third world country with much economic oppression, is currently being debated in the General Assembly about whether or not it should have population control. Many experts believe that, if not controlled, the rate of the increasing population of Africa will have disastrous effects. Over two hundred years ago, a man by the name of Thomas Robert Malthus wrote an essay on the effects of population and the food supply titled "An Essay on the Principle of Population." This essay dealt with the growth of population and if not restrained, how it would destroy man's subsistence here on Earth (Geyer 1). Much of what he wrote applies to not only Africa, but also the entire world today. Currently, the population growth in the Western Nations is approaching zero. This means that each family is having 2.1 children, enough to replace the current population. For North America to double, it would take one hundred years, for Europe, two hundred. But for Africa to double, it would take only twenty-four years. There are many factors as to why Africa, and many other third world countries, reproduces at such a rate. Lack of contraceptives, traditional values, high infant mortality, and poor education are a few of these factors (Duffey 2). "It is a lot easier for a country to deal with its problems if it has less people," says Brian Hailwel, who studies Malthus's theories (Kolasky 1). Carl Haub who stated, "It is almost impossible for a developing country to move from the Third World to the First World when their population is rising so rapidly" supports Hailwel's statement. Malthus believed that the evolution of mankind existed in cycles. Good times occurred when there were high wages and good living conditions, which led to early marriages and rapid population increase. Then come the bad times. Disease, low wages, and epidemics lead to population decrease and a restored balance between population and resources. This c...

Enforceability of international and local mediation (UAE) Assignment

Enforceability of international and local mediation (UAE) - Assignment Example 23). Since its inception, there are records of several organizations and institutions that have used mediation processes to settle what would otherwise have been long running legal litigation and battle. In some cases, mediation has come in as settle options for cross border cases involving the United Arab Emirates and other countries. As far back as 1971, the United Arab Emirates underwent a successful mediation process to settle what would have been a long running international litigation with Oman and this move highly praised by the United States and other international bodies (Condliffe, 2002, p. 233). This means that mediation takes several dimensions and come in as resolution option for different forms of litigations in the United Arab Emirates. However, there have been instances where the mediation processes have not been continued to its logical conclusions. This is because mediation outcomes are not enforced, resulting in the need to resort to the courts. This paper therefor e discusses enforceability of mediation outcome and provides recommendations to overcome the problems associated with lack of compliance. ... 32). Moreover, the conclusion of mediation is free of all forms of legal punishment such as fines and imprisonment. What this means is that parties involved in mediation can always be assured that there will be settlement that does not put any commercial cost on them. What is more, peace is always guaranteed when mediation is used. Whether used by individuals, corporate bodies or between nations, the use of mediation helps in eliminating the fear of violent, brutal and sadistic conclusion to cases (Condliffe, 2002, p.111). This is especially important when using mediation between nations. This point is so made against the background that the world has experienced a number of wars, which experts have ruled that they could have been avoided if there were alternative means of resolving them. There are cases of major corporate organizations which went into liquidation because of protracted court proceedings and rulings. Most of these organizations, if they had chosen the path of mediatio n would still have been functioning and making profits. Finally, it would be said that mediation is essentially important in coming out with easy-to-apply remedies. This is because the outcomes of mediations are mostly arrived as a result of compromise between the parties involved instead of a ruling by an arbitrator. This way, the two parties arrive at consensus that benefits them both in settling their differences. Factors inhibiting the Compliance of Mediation Outcomes Despite the beautiful advantages of the use of mediation that can be listed on and on, there are major hindrances to the successful application of mediation as a dispute resolution and construction mechanism and therefore put a lot of parties

Anlysis of the Russian real estate market Essay

Anlysis of the Russian real estate market - Essay Example Real estate products can range from apartment spaces to residential villa spaces in the category of residential products and office spaces, shopping mall spaces to fully developed industrial estates in the category of commercial and business real estate products. The sizes and locations of such real estate products make for a distinct pricing pattern and the concepts of demand and supply apply to each category of such products and help determine the prices. In fact control of the market ,while seemingly impossible due to heavy investments involved-is also not improbable in some degrees where large real estate houses can control and a determine a particular real estate product. The overall picture in the real estate market is largely subservient to the state of the economy; however; in some international instances the real estate sector has either partly or completely belied the state of the economy. In the US itself, for example, the mortgage market saw a slump which was incommensura te with the overall health of the economy; in fact, the horse seems to be driven by the cart in the sense that the mortgages markets threatened to bring down with it the overall US economy. This underscores the importance of the real estate market for the economy as a whole while also explaining the symbiotic relationship between the two. This paper would focus on the analysis of the Russian real estate markets. The core importance would be attached to the Moscow real estate markets as Moscow happens to be the most important city space in the entire Russia. Methodology The methodological tool would essentially involve a thorough and in-depth literature analysis in search of arguments and facts that help us determine the state of the real estate markets in Russia at an a latest date. In additon, wherever required, the paper would also endeavor to include relevant secondary data and figures so as to support the arguments sifted out in the literature review. The paper would conclude with comments on the prevailing state of the Russian real estate markets in nutshell. The paper is written with a view to guide a prospective foreign investor. The literature review would be deployed to gather arguments to substantiate above research objectives and to establish arguments in the research. This research methodology was a detailed, descriptive analysis of the arguments presented in the available research evidence. The research method essentially entailed conduct of intensive interrogation of published documentary materials with the explicit aim of addressing the above stated issues which this paper deals with, providing a critique of existing theory and positions. Standard search approaches were used to retrieve the sample of published and unpublished studies for this in-depth literature review. Appropriate on-line journals were also searched. Citations in bibliographies of identified studies were reviewed to uncover additional references. Retrieval using the ancestry method was used as it is a most fruitful approach. The overall view of the literature review based research method would be a view usually taken in phenomenology . Phenomenology is a science which focuses on describing particular phenomena as lived experience. The
